395 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that one local authority has decided to publish the names of grant recipients; and if this is in accord with departmental policy in view of the fact that it reveals information regarding the private financial situation of families. I am aware of the case in question and my officials have been in touch with officials of the relevant council which has confirmed that it is not now intended to publish any names of higher education grant recipients.
In addition, my officials have recently written to all local authorities and vocational education committees reminding them of the provisions in the student support schemes regarding the disclosure of information and of their obligations under the Data Protection Act, 1998.
