Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Derek McDowell

Question:

41 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to review Garda levels at Dublin Airport in view of the apparent ease with which armed robbers were able to take more than £100,000 from the Bank of Ireland branch there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24303/99]

I have been advised by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources, that the deployment of Garda resources at Dublin Airport is under review.

Such a review would, of course, take into account any lessons to be learned in the light of an incident of the kind referred to in the Deputy's question. The House will appreciate that it would be both inappropriate and counterproductive to disclose details of the Garda presence at the airport or any changes in security which have been made or are intended. While clearly the Garda has a role to play, the security arrangements at the bank in question are a matter in relation to which both the bank and the airport authorities would have responsibilities.
