Charles Flanagan

Question:

70 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps, if any, he proposes to take to assist Victim Support in completing its network of operation countrywide. [24338/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 70 together.

The financial support which my Department provides to victim support has gone from £180,000 in 1996 to £651,000 in the current year. These figures reflect the rapid growth and development of the organisation in recent years and are indicative of the fact that victim support is now providing a comprehensive range of support, counselling, practical and other services to crime victims throughout the country.

The allocation to victim support for next year as published in last week's abridged Estimates is £655,000 and this continues to reflect the high priority which I attach to its activities. I accept the importance of the completion of their national network of operations and the financial implications involved have been the subject of ongoing discussions with my Department. The Deputy will be aware that there is enormous pressure for resources in all areas of my Department but I will keep the allocation under review to see if any further funding contributions can be made in this particular area.
