Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Child Prostitution.

Question:

66 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide details of information on recent trends in child prostitution; the number of arrests of persons in the past three years who have been involved in the organisation of child prostitution and those who have procured children for sexual purposes; if he has satisfied himself that legal sanctions are adequate to deal with this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24332/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence of organised child prostitution in Ireland and that there have been no arrests in the past three years of persons involved in the organisation of child prostitution or the procurement of children for sexual purposes.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the existing legislation is more than adequate to deal with any offences of this type which may be disclosed.
