Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traffic Wardens.

Austin Deasy

Question:

69 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will ensure that traffic wardens are afforded the same protection as the gardaí when subjected to an assault during the course of carrying out their duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23441/99]

I assure the Deputy that assaults on traffic wardens, of which, thankfully there are few, are fully investigated by the gardaí and prosecutions are taken where evidence of assault is available. I am informed by the Garda authorities that in 1998 eight assaults on traffic wardens were reported. In 1999, to date there has been a total of four cases of assault against traffic wardens.

I assure the Deputy that the Garda authorities, as the employer, is conscious of the need to maintain a safe system of work and where improvements are deemed necessary, they will be implemented.
