Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Staff.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

89 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the monthly staff costs of the new Mountjoy women's prison and Cloverhill Prison since he officially opened both units [24285/99]

The monthly staff costs, including pay and overtime, of Cloverhill Prison since the official opening on 1 May 1999 are as follows:

May

£1,976.03

June

£14,828.79

July

£18,195.72

August

£14,721.38

September

£44,445.85

October

£89,055.20

The majority of the overtime costs were incurred in the supervision of contractors engaged in addressing difficulties which arose during the commissioning period and in necessary follow-up security searches.
The monthly staff costs of the new women's prison, Dóchas Centre, Mountjoy, since the official opening on 28 September 1999 are as follows: October, £4,185.28; November, £4,185.28.
These figures are approximate and are based on the cost of two staff who were the only ones officially assigned specifically to the new women's prison during this period. In the coming weeks, the staff of the existing women's prison will transfer over the new prison.
As the new women's prison is located adjacent to the existing Mountjoy complex, additional staff resources from the main Mountjoy Prison have been allocated there from time to time. It is not possible to extract the exact staff cost of thisad hoc attendance.
