Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Food Labelling.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

101 Mr. Connaughton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the labelling requirements for imported meat in the retail, restaurant, hotel and catering areas subsequently sold to consumers. [24396/99]

In so far as my Department is concerned, we have responsibility for the European Communities (Labelling, Presentations and Advertising of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 1982 (as amended), which implement Directive 79/112/EEC (as amended) on the labelling, advertising, and presentation of foodstuffs. The regulations provide, inter alia, that most prepackaged foods, including meat, whether imported or not, must include certain information, including the following, on the label: the name of the food; the name or business name and address of the manufacturer, packer or seller established within the EU, and the country of origin if its absence might mislead to a material degree.

The regulations cover foodstuffs intended for sale to the end consumer and to the catering trade.
