Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Regulation.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

121 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on whether digital subscriber line is a key technology for the future; the arrangements, if any, she is making to encourage its introduction on a non-monopoly basis; and the costings involved. [24384/99]

Digital subscriber line technology is among a number of possible technologies by which broadband services can be delivered to residential and business users. Other options include wireless local loop and the development of the various television transmission networks for interactive services.

I regard the availability to users of a choice of high-speed telecommunications access methods as important for the development of the information society and electronic commerce in Ireland. I understand interested parties in Ireland are developing plans to offer high speed telecommunications services to customers using some of the various technology options available.

Any provisions regarding the availability of digital subscriber line technology on a competitive basis and any related cost or pricing issues are a matter for the Director of Telecommunications Regulation.
