In June of this year I announced my decision to remove the Irish requirement for the generality of second-level teachers who are not required to use the language in the course of their everyday work. Teachers of Irish and teachers employed in Gaeltacht schools and in other schools where Irish is the medium of instruction will still be required to be fully proficient in Irish.
I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, provided the teacher is not in one of the categories listed, the teacher to whom the Deputy refers will not be required to attain the Irish requirement and will retain permanent status as a teacher with City of Dublin VEC.
