Vol. 511 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Willie Penrose

Question:

98 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in progressing and advancing safety proposals at Taughmon national school, Mullingar, County Westmeath, in view of the fact that the parish has made available part of its own property to facilitate this development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24784/99]

The board of management of Taughmon national school has recently agreed to revised plans for additional facilities at the school.

These revised plans have now been submitted to the local authority for planning permission.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the provision of extra facilities required at Maynooth post primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; the full extent and nature of these facilities; the position in relation to the procedural stages through which the project must proceed; the number of stages remaining; the obstacles, if any, impeding the early provision of the facilities; the date for the commencement of site works and occupation of the new facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24785/99]

My Department's post primary building unit agreed to provide an extension to Maynooth post primary school. The proposed extension includes four general classrooms, demonstration room, special tuition room, guidance suite, PE hall with changing area and related ancillary accommodation.

Prior to the commencement of architectural planning, of which there are six stages, the long-term projected enrolment of the school had been agreed with County Kildare VEC at 800 pupils. Accordingly the architectural planning commenced on the basis of providing sufficient accommodation to cater for a long-term enrolment of 800 pupils at the school.

Following the initiation of stage 2 (outline sketch scheme) of architectural planning, the chief executive officer of County Kildare VEC raised concerns regarding the long-term projected enrolment which had previously been agreed. Accordingly, the planning section of my Department is reviewing this matter. The remaining stages of architectural planning have been suspended pending the completion of this review.

At this early stage, it is not possible to indicate when this project is likely to go to construction or when the accommodation will be available.

Liam Aylward

Question:

100 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress to date on the provision of a sports facility at St. Kieran's college, County Kilkenny; and the amount of finance approved for this project. [24786/99]

My Department's building unit is awaiting the submission of tender documents from St. Kieran's college, Kilkenny in relation to the school's application for grant assistance towards the upgrading of PE facilities.

The final amount approved for this project will be dependent on the satisfactory completion of the tender documentation.
