Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tourism Project.

Ivan Yates

Question:

127 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the shortfall in funding of the flagship tourism project in New Ross of the Dunbrody timber hull boat under the auspices of the John F. Kennedy Trust; the proposals, if any, he has to procure funding through any scheme through his Department to ensure that this project is completed in view of the large amount of public funds already invested in it; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25613/99]

This project involves the building of a full scale replica of the famine ship Dunbrody which is currently located in a dry dock outside New Ross, County Wexford, and is being promoted by the John F. Kennedy Trust. Overall responsibility for the project currently rests with the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation. The Government has considered proposals concerning the future of this project and the provision of further State support.

As part of this process, the Government has asked that the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources should carry out a due diligence examination. Arrangements for the urgent undertaking of this examination are being put in place.
