Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pharmacist Numbers.

Bernard Allen

Question:

183 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the discussions, if any, he has had with the Department of Education and Science regarding the current situation whereby the hospital sector is unable to compete effectively with the community sector in the market for pharmacists. [25609/99]

In 1998 the Higher Education Authority commissioned a study of manpower issues in the pharmacy area. This report, Assessing Supply in relation to Prospective Demand for Pharmacists in Ireland, was published last week. The report contains a number of recommendations in relation to increasing the overall supply of pharmacists in Ireland and also contains recommendations in relation to increasing the supply of pharmacists in the hospital sector. The report is now under consideration by the various relevant Departments.
