Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Technological Aids.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

206 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position in relation to the use by the Garda of modern technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25654/99]

I am unwavering in my commitment to ensuring that the Garda Síochána is fully equipped with the most up-to-date technological aids in its ongoing crime prevention and detection tasks.

For example, the PULSE project, the new Garda computer system, continues to progress well, with a major suite of information systems having recently been made operationally ready. Moreover, I secured Government approval earlier this year to begin the replacement of the existing national Garda radio network with a new, integrated, digital system that, among many other benefits, will provide secure, encrypted radio communications for all members of the force.

The Garda Síochána has also now been provided with an air support unit, comprising a fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter, and I have recently approved the purchase of a second helicopter to upgrade the capabilities of the unit. Furthermore, a high-speed patrol launch for use by the Garda water unit will soon be provided to ensure the effective policing of inland waterways.

Other significant technology developments within the force include CCTV systems in Dublin and Tralee, with one for Cork planned; a variety of operational devices, such as the stinger system; a computerised automatic fingerprint identification system; and sophisticated speed and traffic detection equipment.

I will continue to keep the technological requirements of the Garda Síochána under review, with the goal of further enhancing the capabilities of the force in its operational activities.
