Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Meals Scheme.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

222 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the financial assistance, if any, given towards school meals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25565/99]

Responsibility for the school meals scheme rests with the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs and my Department does not therefore provide any financial assistance for schools in respect of same.

However, the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs is currently carrying out a review of the scheme. A working group comprising of officials from that Department and the Department of Education and Science, together with representatives from the Department of Health and Children, the Department of the Environment and Local Government, the Department of Finance and Dublin Corporation has been established for the purposes of the review. The first meeting of the working group took place in September.
In carrying out the review of the schools meals scheme the working group will be consulting with many other relevant bodies. It is anticipated that it will take seven to eight months to complete this process.
