Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

230 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which the second level schools capital building programme in respect of County Kildare meets the requirements of the county, with particular reference to VEC schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25573/99]

School managerial authorities apply to my Department for funding for capital works as needs present.

The Deputy will be aware from the recently published spending Estimates for year 2000 that for the third successive year, I have very substantially increased the level of capital funding available for second level school accommodation. The second level capital programme for 2000, which has been set at a record level of IR£100 million, demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving the quality of second level accommodation. I am confident that this level of funding is adequate to meet needs presenting throughout 2000.
