Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Ivor Callely

Question:

61 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the school transport scheme in urban areas; the percentage of children in rural areas which qualify for this scheme; the comparative percentage for urban areas; the criteria order under which a parent or guardian travel with the pupil; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25177/99]

The position generally is that the school transport scheme provides a basic service for children, primarily those residing in rural areas, who might otherwise have difficulty in attending their nearest school regularly. Accommodation on school transport is used to maximise the carrying capacity for eligible and fare paying pupils. No provision is made under the scheme for parents or guardians to accompany their children to school.

With regard to urban areas, as schools are generally closer to pupil's homes, fewer pupils are eligible for transport under the terms of the scheme. Where pupils are eligible for transport and reside within range of public scheduled transport, they are issued with term tickets on these services. As in the case of rural services there is no provision for accompanying parents or guardians.

The information sought by the Deputy regarding the percentages of children residing in rural and urban areas who qualify for school transport is not available. My Department has no plans at present to review the school transport scheme specifically in relation to urban areas.
