Written Answers. - Official Engagements.

Bernard Allen

Question:

46 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the issues raised with him by Irish missionaries and non-governmental organisations on his recent visit to Kenya. [25488/99]

I visited Kenya from 21 to 23 November. During the visit I met with a number of Irish missionaries and non-governmental organisations and Government leaders, and visited a variety of projects including those funded or supported by Irish aid.

In Nairobi I met with representatives of Concern and Trócaire at their headquarters, as well as representatives of GOAL, Gorta and Irish missionaries who outlined their work in Kenya and the region, including in Somalia. We discussed a number of issues, including the current humanitarian and security situation in Somalia, and prospects for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development – IGAD – peace process. I availed of the opportunity to confirm Ireland's support, together with our European Union partners, towards the achievement of a peaceful resolution of these problems.

Throughout my visit I was briefed on a number of issues, including operational concerns on the part of some of the NGOs. I have taken note of these issues, and will continue to examine opportunities to support the groups in their work as appropriate. Throughout all the discussions there was a clear desire on the part of those involved on the ground to continue and expand their work.

In addition to the above, I met with a representative of the Kenyan Human Rights Commission with whom I discussed the current situation as well as future developments in Kenya, as well as the KHRC's projects in collaboration with the Irish NGO, Trócaire.

I visited a number of projects in the city and surrounding countryside, and expressed the appreciation of the Irish Government for the excellent work being carried out by these groups in Kenya. In the Lara district near Nakuru, I also visited the secondary school and farm project operated by the Franciscan Brothers, and availed of the opportunity to express my sympathy and that of the Government to the brothers on the tragic loss of their colleague and friend, Brother Larry Timmons, who was murdered at Lara in 1997.
