Vol. 512 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

88 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her Department has completed its research into the pension arrangements of former employees of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs; if, further to Parliamentary Question 87 of 30 June 1999, she will examine the circumstances of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11, and others in similar circumstances, given that he has suffered less favourable pension arrangements after the establishment of Telecom Éireann in 1983; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25782/99]

As stated in my response to Parliamentary Question No. 87 of 30 June 1999, policy administration in relation to superannuation arrangements of former employees of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs who transferred to Telecom Éireann on vesting day is essentially a matter for the company.

I am advised that it is the current policy of Eircom that pensions are linked to increases granted to appropriate serving staff. I understand that the case referred to by the Deputy arises from a grade restructuring which took place in May 1987. The person referred to had retired in September 1986 and feels that he did not receive an increase in his pension entitlement because of the grade restructuring. My Department had, following representations from the Deputy, taken this matter up with the company some time ago. A response is still awaited but I have arranged to have the matter raised with the company again. I will let the Deputy have a response in due course.
