Vol. 512 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Network.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

104 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the Government's policy on the possibility of designating strategic national secondary routes as national primary routes; when it was decided to designate national primary and secondary roads in the first instance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26578/99]

A lengthy and comprehensive review of the national road system was concluded by the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994. This review was carried out in consultation with the National Roads Authority and local authorities and took account of representations received from a wide range of local interests. There are accordingly no proposals for significant changes in the national road network in the short-term. Traffic patterns will, however, continue to be monitored in order to identify any long-term changes which might have implications for the classified system.
