Written Answers. - Institutes of Technology.

Enda Kenny

Question:

214 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the expansion programme of the GMIT in Castlebar, County Mayo; the scale of development involved; the land to be acquired; the moneys allocated for developmental purposes for 2000; the projected timescale for completion; the projected numbers of students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27207/99]

My Department has advised the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology that funding is available to facilitate the purchase of phase A of the Castlebar campus. This provides for the acquisition of the building currently in use by the institute and grounds of circa 28 acres plus some additional building. Technical and legal work is proceeding to complete this transaction as soon as possible. The establishment of the Castlebar Education Centre on the site has been agreed and construction work is already under way.

Phase three costing £1.3 million is the latest development at the Castlebar campus and involves both refurbishment and equipment purchases. This phase three project is practically complete and will be followed by phase four which will address the outstanding refurbishment issues at the Castlebar campus during 2000.
The projected number of full-time students for the 2000-2001 academic year is 780.
