Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tobacco Industry.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

22 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has concluded his consideration of whether the State will sue tobacco companies for costs incurred in treating people suffering from smoking related illnesses; if not, when he will make a decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27059/99]

The tobacco free policy group which I established to carry out a fundamental review on tobacco and health also had a remit to monitor litigation against the tobacco industry in the US, the UK and Europe generally. The group prepared an interim report on this matter which I am now considering.
