Vol. 512 No. 8

Written Answers. - Court Statistics.

Richard Bruton

Question:

114 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of court cases in which defendants were charged with child physical or sexual abuse for each of the years from 1994 to date in 1999. [27472/99]

I am informed by the Courts Service that at present court statistics are not compiled in such a way as to provide the information sought by the Deputy.

However, a major investment of approximately £16 million is being made in the development of an information technology programme for the courts. This programme includes systems currently under development which will provide comprehensive statistical information on court activity including the type of statistics sought by the Deputy.

Question:

115 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of reported cases of sexual and physical child abuse between 1994 and 1999, including those where a prosecution did not take place. [27473/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information as requested is not readily available and could be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
