Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Silver Eel Industry.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

168 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the financial crisis in the silver eel industry due to a considerable reduction in prices; if his attention has further been drawn to the flooding of the European market due to overproduction of farmed eels; the assistance, if any, which will be given to the industry to ensure its survival; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1412/00]

The price of silver and brown eel is subject to the market forces of supply and demand. BIM informs me that the price for eel on the European market is depressed at present due to an increased supply of both wild and farmed eel coupled with a reduction in consumption.

While the eel industry is relatively undeveloped in Ireland there is a widespread view that the potential for development is substantial. In order to assess this potential I propose to establish a strategic review group on the eel industry shortly to look at all issues, including the strategic development and general regulation of the industry. The review group will be representative of all key interests in the sector.
