Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Alternative Energy Projects.

Austin Deasy

Question:

192 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the public's concept of wind farms; and the plans, if any, she has to instigate an information campaign on the value to the public's health of these projects. [1799/00]

The Irish Energy Centre, through the Renewable Energy Information Office, provides an information service to the public on the benefits of the further deployment of renewable energies and promotes the increased use of such technologies including wind energy.

As announced in the green paper on sustainable energy the Irish energy centre will be strengthened to carry out a significantly increased mandate on energy efficiency and renewable energy which includes intensive public awareness campaigns. In addition, I have established a renewable energy strategy group to examine all issues relating to the widespread deployment of renewable energy technologies. This group is to report later in the year and is to examine, inter alia, issues such as planning-location and the interaction between the two, which bear on public acceptance.

The liberalisation of the electricity market and the marketing activities of new players such as we have seen earlier this week will also better inform the public.
