Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Greyhound Industry.

Ivan Yates

Question:

225 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the proposals, if any, he has submitted to the EU Commission under the national development plan for the reintroduction of grants for greyhound enterprises; the proposals, if any, he has for grants for this sector under the lifetime of the plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1071/00]

I have not included any proposals for the reintroduction of European grants for greyhound enterprises in the national development plan submitted to the Commission. Grants for greyhound breeding under the last EU co-financed operational programme were discontinued after representations were made to the EU Commission on welfare related issues. I am chan nelling all the Exchequer funding available for the development of this sector through Bord na gCon and I have increased the grant-in-aid to the board this year to £6.5 million.
