Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Collection.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

337 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the assurance, if any, he will give that the claims for unpaid revenue, to be levied on financial institutions as a result of the DIRT inquiry, will not be passed on by the same institutions to their customers through higher charges or increased mortgage repayments. [1127/00]

A group has been established at a senior level in my Department to examine those recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee report on the DIRT inquiry that come within the remit, in the broader sense, of the Minister for Finance and to draw up a programme of action in that connection. A number of the recommendations concerning taxation, including the recovery of unpaid tax, are being examined in the context of the Finance Bill which is due to be published next month. As this examination, which includes an assessment by the Office of the Attorney General of the legal issues involved, has not been completed it would not be appropriate for me at this stage to comment on matters that might arise from the implementation of these recommendations.
