Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Taxi Regulations.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

502 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who has debts of £65,000 and feels his livelihood will be threatened by the way the Government is issuing additional taxi licences and who states that an agreement existed for a substantial increase in taxi licences which the Government has not honoured; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1101/00]

In providing for the early grant of a large number of new taxi licences for the Dublin taximeter area, the Government has sought to devise solutions which will be fair to existing taxi service providers as well as also providing a much improved service to the public. The bulk of new licences will accordingly be offered to existing taxi licence holders.

I am confident that the increase in Dublin taxi numbers will benefit both the public in terms of improved and reliable quality of service and taxi service providers in terms of increased use of taxis.
