Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rent Subsidy Scheme.

John Dennehy

Question:

509 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to transfer the administration of the rent subsidy scheme from health boards to local authorities; the changes, if any, which will take place within the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1108/00]

The Government has decided, in principle, to establish a new local authority rent assistance scheme to replace, in the main, the current arrangements for rent supplementation under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme. A planning group will shortly be established under the aegis of my Department to prepare a report for Government in relation to the new rent assistance arrangements and the various issues arising in their implementation.
