Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Michael Ring

Question:

518 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will intervene with a company (details supplied) to ensure that an additional car testing centre for Mayo is located at Belmullet, County Mayo, to facilitate the people of the Erris region. [1119/00]

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

572 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that residents in the Beara region of County Cork are living almost 70 miles from the national car test centre in Skibbereen, south-west Cork; the steps, if any, he will take to correct this anomaly; and if he will provide a mobile car testing unit to cater for the Beara region and the two other peninsula areas, Mizen and Sheeps Head. [1817/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 518 and 572 together.

Services are provided by National Car Testing Service – NCTS – Limited in accordance with the tender submitted by the company and the contract signed with the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. Testing is carried out at 43 centres countrywide, including three mobile centres. Each test centre is located within 30 miles of 90% of the car owners served by it.

In addition to the level of service provided for in the contract, NCTS may be prepared, at the request of, and to provide in co-operation with, local authorities a number of additional mobile centres in remote areas.
