Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

John McGuinness

Question:

627 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress, if any, being made in the restoration work being carried out at Kells Priory, County Kilkenny; the plans, if any, she has for the overall site; the amount of money allocated in 1999 and 2000 for the project; and if her attention has been drawn to the fact that certain walls have collapsed and are in need of urgent attention. [1225/00]

The programme of conservation works planned for Kells Priory has now commenced. Progress to date has been slowed by shortages of skilled workers available to the heritage services of my Department. Arrangements to fill these vacancies are in train and as soon as positions are filled the level of activity should increase. Site presentation works will also be carried out which will include renewing gravelled areas, cutting back vegetation and removing excavation spoil. Information panels and signs will also be erected. The cost of these works over the three year programme is £300,000 and provision is being made in my Department's spending Estimates to meet the costs involved.

I am aware that fragments of masonry fell from the tower some time ago. Signs and barriers were erected at the time to keep members of the public away from this area. The proposed works, which involve conservation of the walls, will have the effect of remedying the dangerous masonry.
