Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drug Dealings.

Tony Gregory

Question:

667 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will review the need for further sanctions against landlords whose premises continue to be used for criminal purposes, such as drug dealing, after these activities have been brought to the landlords attention by the gardaí. [1545/00]

The current legislation cover ing this area is the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, which fails within the remit of my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children.

Section 19 of this Act makes it an offence for a person who is the occupier of, is in control of or is concerned in the management of any land, vehicle or vessel, to knowingly permit or suffer the use of the land, vehicle or vessel for, inter alia, the sale, supply or distribution of a controlled drug.

The Minister for Health and Children has informed me that he is satisfied that the current legislation is adequate to deal with the matters raised by the Deputy. However, he has also informed me that, if he should receive information that the legislation in its current format restricts the gardaí or other agencies in dealing with the matters raised, he will review the situation.
