Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - House Construction Standards.

Question:

84 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of inspectors employed by his Department to assess the standard of construction in new homes; the number employed in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1441/00]

Primary responsibility for ensuring compliance with the proper standards of design and construction of new houses and with the building regulations rests with architects, designers, and builders.

I am assuming that the Deputy, in his question, is referring to the number of inspectors engaged in inspections of new private housing. These inspectors assess new houses for which grant applications have been received to ensure compliance with grant standards.

In addition, my Department's inspectors also carry out inspections, on an agency basis, for the homebond structural guarantee scheme for houses outside the Dublin area.

The number of these inspectors employed by my Department in the period 1995 to 2000 is as follows: January 1995, 30; January 1996, 30; January 1997, 29; January 1998, 28; January 1999, 29; January 2000, 29.
