Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Private Rented Dwellings.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

141 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach the number of housing units in respect of private rented stock; the number of these units rented ten years ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2011/00]

The most recent census information on the number of private rented dwellings is in relation to 1991. According to the census for that year, there were 81,424 private rented dwellings in 1991 compared with 90,315 ten years earlier. These represented 8% and 10.1% respectively of the total number of households. A question on occupancy status will be asked in the 2001 census planned for April 2001.

The 1997 Labour Force Survey indicated that there were 131,600 private rented dwellings representing 11% of the total. Corresponding information has been collected in the quarterly national household survey in quarter three of 1998 and 1999 and the CSO hopes to publish these results by April 2000.
