Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Paul Bradford

Question:

114 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will consider a special programme of county road repair and development in view of the perceived imbalance of expenditure on national primary roads vis-à-vis county roads. [2120/00]

Greatly increased funds are being made available to county councils under the ten year restoration programme for regional and county roads, which is based on an undertaking to restore all non-national roads in county council areas to a good level of service over the life of the programme, that is by 2005. The restoration of regional and county roads under the programme is on target and is progressing systematically, on the basis of priorities identified by local authorities in multi-annual programmes.

Under the restoration programme, grants have increased from £20 million in 1995 to over £138 million in 1999. Non-national road grants generally have increased from £122.8 million in 1995 to £237.2 million in 1999. I will be announcing the 2000 allocations on 31 January 2000.
