Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Heritage Projects.

Enda Kenny

Question:

137 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the conditions under which a portion of the Book of Kells will be transferred to Australia for three months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2133/00]

It should first be clarified that the owner of the Book of Kells is Trinity College, and it is Trinity College that is loaning a volume of the Book of Kells to the National Gallery of Australia.

My role is in respect of the issuing of an export licence for an archaeological object under the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997. An application has been received from Trinity College for the temporary export of the Book of Kells. It has been decided to grant this application subject to Trinity College being satisfied as to the security arrangements for transport and safe keeping.
