Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Archaelogical Sites.

David Stanton

Question:

149 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will report on the mechanism used to purchase the Battle of the Boyne site; the projected costs involved; the timescale and future plans in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2145/00]

The Government approved, in principle, the purchase and development of property at the site of the Battle of the Boyne. The Office of Public Works negotiated terms with the vendors on the recommendation of their professional valuers. In accordance with normal practice, the purchase consideration is confidential between the two parties.

As a development scheme has not yet been devised it is not possible to give a firm estimate of cost at this stage. The overall scheme will take about three years to implement.

Interim measures at a cost of £150,000 will also be implemented. These measures include improvement of public access, facilities and informational material. A planning study is also being undertaken.
