Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cattle Tags.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

77 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the reason a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan who applied for a tag for his animal in November 1999 had not received this by 24 January 2000; the way in which farmers can meet the strict guidelines to tagging calves at birth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2183/00]

A tag was issued by Eurotags, Mullinahone, to the person in question on 21 January 2000.

The delay in the issue of the tag in this case was attributable to the fact that the herd had inadvertently been made dormant on the computer system and accordingly, the tag could not be released by Eurotags until the status of the herd was re-established by the district veterinary office.

Since 1 January 2000 the legal requirement is that bovine animals must be tagged within 20 days of birth and registered with the national bovine animal registration service in Bandon within a further seven days.
