Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Salmon Commission.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

18 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when the National Salmon Commission will be established. [3558/00]

The Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1999, provides for the establishment of the National Salmon Commission on a statutory basis. The commission will have the general function of assisting and advising the Minister in relation to the conservation, management, protection and development of the national salmon resource in consultation with the fisheries boards and the Marine Institute and such other bodies as may be directed.

The Act provides that the commission shall consist of a chairman and not more than 20 other members, of which 16 shall be appointed from among those nominated by such bodies and organisations as may be prescribed by order. I plan to formally establish the commission by order and to finalise the appointment of chairperson and members shortly.
