Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

26 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when increases in forestry grants and premium payments will be passed on to farmers in respect of grant aided planting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26452/99]

My Department submitted proposals to increase afforestation and premium levels to the European Commission on 31 August 1999.

In the meantime, there have been regular contacts with the Commission at all levels on the proposals. We have repeatedly stressed to the Commission the importance and urgency attaching to our proposals. I am satisfied that good progress has now been made in relation to afforestation grant levels. Similar progress has not yet been made in relation to premiums and contacts with the Commission are continuing as a matter of urgency.

I hope to make an announcement as soon as discussions with the Commission have concluded.
