Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Michael Bell

Question:

51 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to develop and improve the operation of small fishing harbours; the local authorities, if any, which have made applications for funding; the level of funding in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3586/00]

The national development plan provides £60 million for the development of fishery harbours and landing places, as well as ancillary infrastructure and facilities. This funding is a major increase over the last programme and will facilitate a targeted programme aimed at providing the safe, modern and efficient infrastructure which is an essential underpinning for the fishing and aquaculture industries.

While funding will be directed primarily towards key strategic fishery harbours, including Killybegs, Rosa Mhil, Dingle and Castletownbere, I will be addressing the development and modernisation of smaller harbours and landing places right around the coast, in line with the needs of local fishing and aquaculture interests. I have therefore asked the Department to review and prioritise proposals on hand from local authorities in light of available funds.
