Vol. 514 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

57 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if an application by a person (details supplied) for permission to employ a specified number of non-nationals which was rejected will be re-examined in the event of the application being resubmitted while they are outside this jurisdiction; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3530/00]

I understand that the non-nationals who were the subject of the applications for work permits were permitted to land in this country in July and August 1999 as seamen under contract to join various ships at Dublin port.

The Deputy will appreciate that this raises questions about their qualifications for the positions concerned as well as their current residency status in the State. In addition I understand that the applicant did not submit any evidence of attempts to recruit other European Economic Area nationals for the jobs in question. In the circumstances it is considered that it would not be appropriate to issue work permits in the case.
