Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - State Laboratory.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

155 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has for use in the future of the State Laboratory at Abbotstown; if it will continue to provide laboratory services; if so, the extent in this regard in view of recent developments which may affect the status quo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3993/00]

The Government has decided that the State Laboratory, which is under the aegis of my Department, should be relocated from Abbotstown to Backweston Farm which is between Lucan and Celbridge, County Kildare. I assure the Deputy that the relocation to Backweston Farm will not in any way affect the range of analytical and other functions undertaken by the State Laboratory. Planning for the relocation and replacement of the facilities currently at Abbotstown has commenced. The proposed transfer will be undertaken in such a way as to avoid disruption of the ongoing work of the State Laboratory. Staff interests will be consulted in relation to all aspects of the proposed relocation.
