Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disability Services.

Michael Creed

Question:

183 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress, if any, regarding the provision of adequate accommodation for a person (details supplied) in the Southern Health Board area in conjunction with the Lavanagh Centre as contained in correspondence forwarded to his Department (details supplied). [3967/00]

The provision of residential services for people with a physical disability is a matter for the relevant health board in any individual case. On foot of representations received on behalf of the individual concerned, my Department has been in contact with the Southern Health Board on the matter. The board advises that the Lavanagh Centre, which is run by Cerebral Palsy Ireland, has identified a requirement for residential care for a number of their clients attending day services, including the individual concerned. The Lavanagh Centre have brought forward proposals for the development of residential facilities to address this need and these proposals are currently being considered by the regional co-ordinating committee for physical and sensory disability services and a decision will be finalised by early March, 2000. These proposals take account of the requirements of the named individual.

While the development proposals are being considered, the health board has provided additional funding to assist in the provision of home support services for the individual concerned. The board's public health nursing and medical departments also continue with their regular contact to ensure the individual's needs are catered for.
