Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

John McGuinness

Question:

316 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of secondary school places in Kilkenny city; if he has satisfied himself that the places available are sufficient for students taking up second level places in Kilkenny; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a number of students have been disappointed and are having difficulty in securing a place in the city at second level. [3951/00]

The information requested is being compiled and will be forwarded as soon as possible.

If the Deputy has any information indicating a shortage of second level school places in Kilkenny city and sends this to me, I will have the matter examined.

My role as Minister for Education and Science is to ensure that overall capacity in a multi-school area is sufficient to accommodate all the pupils presenting for enrolment. I do not have a responsibility to ensure that a place is available in the school of first choice.
