Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Transport Strategy.

Richard Bruton

Question:

106 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the progress, if any, made on the proposal to establish a depot in Clondalkin with rail links into the port as an element of a coherent Dublin transport strategy which would reduce the necessity for heavy goods vehicles traffic movements. [4248/00]

I am informed that approximately three years ago CIE was involved, on a without prejudice basis, in a proposal to develop a national distribution centre in conjunction with a company called Charnwood Properties. It was envisaged that the centre would be located outside the M50 motorway at Clondalkin and be linked to the Dublin-Cork rail line.

I understand that a planning application was lodged with South Dublin County Council. However, I am informed that following presentations to and discussions with South Dublin County Council, it became apparent that the proposal was unlikely to achieve sufficient support from the elected members to be successful.

In any event, the proposal does not appear to have been progressed since then.
