Vol. 514 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Expenditure.

Billy Timmins

Question:

172 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide a copy of the formal objection lodged and of any correspondence between his Department and the source of the objection in relation to expenditure incurred in 1997 by Wicklow County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4759/00]

Finalisation of the 1997 audit for Wicklow County Council awaits consideration and decision by the local government auditor concerned on a formal objection which has been lodged with him in relation to expenditure incurred during the year in question.

In undertaking the audit of various bodies, including consideration of any objections at audit, local government auditors are independent in the exercise of their functions and the Minister for the Environment and Local Government has no function in this regard. The Minister is not notified by the local government audit service as to the identity of persons lodging objections at audit to expenditure incurred by local authorities.
