Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

180 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the concern regarding the proposed loss of the National Maritime Museum to Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; and the proposals, if any, she will bring forward to reverse this situation. [4761/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 179 and 180 together.

I have no statutory responsibility for the Maritime Museum in Dún Laoghaire. However, there have been discussions between my Department and the Maritime Institute of Ireland which runs the maritime museum in Dún Laoghaire in relation to tentative proposals for a museum, under the aegis of the National Museum of Ireland, within the Dublin Docklands Development Authority area. Such proposals, if brought to fruition, subject to agreement with the institute, might provide a long-term home for the maritime museum. The further development of this proposal depends on decisions of the docklands authority in the first place.
