Vol. 514 No. 5

Other Questions. - Irish Red Cross.

Question:

11 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Defence when the term of office of the Government nominees to the central council of the Irish Red Cross will expire; the criteria he will use in appointing replacements; if he will nominate personnel working for the society; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4540/00]

The term of office of Government nominees to the central council of the Irish Red Cross Society expires on 30 April 2000. The Government carefully considers and nominates persons to the central council of the Irish Red Cross Society who it deems will make a positive contribution to the affairs of the society.

Previously I asked the Minister about members of staff, and he stated that he would take my comments into account subject to the parameters of the legislation. I again ask the Minister to consider the inclusion of a member of staff on the board of directors.

As I indicated on that occasion, I am not ruling in or out the proposal put forward by the Deputy, but I am anxious that we move forward in an extremely positive way. I undertook to examine the suggestion when the time came, and I will do that.
