Vol. 514 No. 5

Other Questions. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Jack Wall

Question:

13 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding the refurbishment of the Curragh swimming pool; the proposed date for the re-opening of the facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4533/00]

The Deputy is winning on this one. Tenders have been invited for the main project comprising construction of the new 25 metre pool and the upgrading of the existing gymnasium, and are due for return on 15 March 2000. Tenders for the provision of mechanical and electrical sub-contract services are expected to be issued before the end of this month. It is anticipated that work on the project will commence in June 2000 and will take approximately 12 months to complete. The pool should be in service immediately thereafter – another monument to the work that is being done.

It is hard to put up with it all. The loss of this facility in the immediate Curragh area cannot be measured. I ask that all the deadlines mentioned by the Minister will be met and that he will do everything possible to shorten them. Is the gymnasium part of the project? What is the position in that regard?

The total cost provision of approximately £4 million should be made at about the same time. I will do my best to ensure all the deadlines are met but the Deputy should bear in mind that I had no choice but to close the swimming pool as it was not safe. I undertook to replace it with a much more modern pool. The loss of the facility will only be for a short time and a luxurious swimming pool will be constructed.
