Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

144 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Defence his views on whether at least a further five civilian staff need to be employed at the Army barracks in Monaghan; if the failure to replace the last five retirements is an indication that he intends to wind down this barracks as part of the overall cutbacks in the Army; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4855/00]

There are no proposals at present to increase the size of the civilian maintenance staff at Monaghan barracks. the existing level of staffing is considered adequate to meet the normal routine maintenance tasks likely to arise.

There is no particular fixed number of civilian appointments established in respect of the complement of civilian employees either in Monaghan barracks or at any other military establishment. Civilian employees are recruited from time to time for service with various military units in the light of relative priorities and needs.
